Christmas

We couldn't have asked for a better Christmas. We were able to spend time with both of our families, which was such a blessing.  Christmas Eve we decided to go to church here in Seattle before heading up to my parents' house. We were treated to a wonderful family service complete with a nativity scene, lots of singing, and action. Jack was thrilled and at one point was even standing on Tom's lap clapping and "singing" along!

Our trip to MV was easy. Thankfully it wasn't snowing, and there weren't many travelers on the road. We had Jack all bathed and in his PJs for the trip up there, hoping that he would fall asleep in the car. No such luck. He was awake the entire time and ready to play when he got to Grammy and gramps house! After several laps around the house, we did finally get him to sleep.

Christmas morning we woke up and opened stockings. Jack got a new hat (among other things), straight from Austria (my parents most recent trip). Doesn't he look like a peppermint candy?

PC252356We waited to open presents until Matt and Joanna arrived. Jack showed only a little interest in opening presents. He did like to tear off small pieces of wrapping paper and hand them to me. Mostly, though, he wanted to push his truck around the house or crawl up the stairs. His joy in these simple things was an excellent reminder that Christmas isn't about "things." We spent the rest of the day playing around the house. We took Jack outside and made him a sledding hill out of the snow shoveled off of my parents' driveway. He couldn't get enough of it!

We did dress Jack up for Christmas dinner, but we quickly took pictures and then let him get his "playing" clothes on. But for a while, he and Grandpa looked alike!

On Friday we went to visit Brita and her family. After a nice visit with them, we took Jack out to the barn to visit some of the calves. He was in awe as they licked Tom's hand.

On Saturday we left for the Roddas. We had a very relaxing day around the house. Well, Tom and I relaxed. Jack spent his time doing laps with his truck and playing in his new "fort" complete with slide. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of him in it (will have to do that when we get it set up at home).

Yesterday we came home. We had such wonderful times with our families, but it did feel good to be home again. We thought that Jack would pass out from exhaustion, but apparently he had other ideas....Last night we all were up the majority of the night. We think Jack is getting a molar, and boy does it sure hurt him!  We're all running on fumes today after a very long night. Hopefully tonight will be better...

SLEDDING!!!

sledding 009 In my last post I spoke of our disappointing trip earlier in the week to Ace to try and buy a sled. Well, leave it to my parents to snatch up the opportunity and get Jack a sled. They stopped by today and brought with them the Winter Lightning a.k.a. Jack's sled. We bundled Jack all up (poor guy) and took him out to try out the sled in our street. Lest you think I am a neglectful parent for sledding with my child in the street, it is important to note that we live on a quiet street that sees very little traffic. AND besides, other kids had been doing it all day long. :)  Well, it didn't take long for Jack to get the hang of the sled and to ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I don't think he stopped smiling the entire time and he was making the funniest little excited giggle as we pulled him up and down the street. For a grand finale, I got on the sled with him and we sledded down together. We definitely have a dare devil in our midst and I know that we will be making many more trips out into the snow to sled, especially when Dad gets home.

Snow Much Fun!!

Tom took the Jeep to work today, so Jack and I are hunkered down here at home. The snow is beautiful at our house and hasn't let up all day long. After his lunch, I got Jack all bundled up and ready for his first venture out into the snow. We actually went up the street to Ace first and attempted to purchase a sled. Apparently everyone else in the neighborhood had the same idea because they were all sold out!  No matter, though, we simply came back home and checked out the snow in the front yard. Jack was pretty curious about it, and kept sticking his face into the snow. The only thing he didn't like were his mittens-he kept wiggling his hands out of them. After we had played for a while, I put Jack in the jogging stroller and the three of us (Monty included) went down to the park to watch the kids sled. Jack was full of "ooohs" as he watched the kids slide down the hill.

Happy 1st Birthday, Jack

It hardly seems possible that at 11:26 am one year ago, we met Jack for the first time. How could we have known then, what great joy this past year would hold for us? Jack has grown our capacity to love, and made us learn to take joy in even the smallest of moments. We are abundantly blessed with a little boy who has a vigor for life. His ever-present smile never ceases to make me smile, and if I could count up all of the kisses he has received over the past year, it would be hundreds of thousands. Looking back on the pictures to follow, I am smiling as I think back to each month. Each of the "firsts" that quickly became part of the daily routine. Each picture revealing a little more of the person he is becoming. Happy birthday to our very special, one of a kind, Jack Jack!
